South Korean creature movie, âMonstrumâ was licensed for distribution in China. The move comes after two years in which Korean entertainment has been unwelcome in the Middle Kingdom.
The sale of the film, to Star Alliance Movies, was announced by sales agent Finecut. It also inked a deal with Singapore-based Clover Films for release of the film in Hong Kong and Macau.
Directed by Huh Jong-ho, âMonstrumâ is said to be based on genuine records made during the Joseon Dynasty of a mysterious monster creature. The film will release in Korea from this week (Sept. 12) through Lotte Entertainment. Clover will release it in Hong Kong in October.
A de facto ban on Korean entertainment content took effect from mid-2016, as a result of political differences between China and Korea. The Chinese government was deeply concerned by Koreaâs decision to allow American THAAD missile defense systems to be stationed on its territory.
The sudden freeze meant Korean TV shows and music acts were dropped by broadcasters and streaming companies, and films ceased to be imported for theatrical release. Co-productions were discouraged and some Korean post-production companies with offices in China repatriated staff.
Particularly hit was Lotte, which agreed to lease land to the Korean government for THAAD. Lotte sold its supermarket division in China, though it managed to hold on to its cinema chain.
âMonstrumâ stars Kim Min-myung and Lee Hye-ri, with production by Taewon Entertainment. It was previously licensed to distributors in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, India, Indonesia, Malaysia & Brunei, North America, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, U.K., and Vietnam.

Reception[edit]Critical response[edit]
Shim Sun-ah from Yonhap News Agency gave a mixed review and wrote, 'Monstrum is the first creature action movie set in the Joseon era and has a suspenseful and entertaining premise, but it is ruined by a predictable plot. One highlight of this film is the design of the monster and splashy special effects. On another positive note, the movie constantly arouses the curiosity of viewers regarding the identity of the strange monster recorded in history, the secret behind the creature and, most importantly, whether the creature existence is true or not.'[14]
At the 2018 Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, the film won the Panorama Fantà stic Audience Award.[15][16]
Box office[edit]
The film finished first place on its opening day, attracting 105,255 moviegoers with US$750,819 gross, placing Searching and new release The Predator on the second and third place respectively. The film continued to top the box office on its second day of release.[17] However, the film dropped to second place during the weekend, tailing Searching on the lead by attracted 421,479 moviegoers with US$3.3 million gross.[18]
As of October 4, 2018, the film earned US$5.5 million from 720,721 total attendance.[1]
